Week 1

Welcome to our 2013 Mini Mermaid Running Club!

We had a great first meeting.  We have a great group of girls, and we had a lot of fun!

The first thing we did was decide on our team name.  The girls came up with "The Sprinting Sea Turtles".  I've never seen sea turtles sprint, but I'm sure these girls will show us how it's done.  After agreeing on the name, we came up with our official team rules.  The girls had great ideas for being safe, being good teammates, and for having fun.

And then, it was time for our first workout.  We did a quick warm up, some stretches, a few jumping jacks and inch worms, and then we ran.  The goal today was to keep moving for 20 minutes.  Many of the girls ran the whole time, others mixed walking, with some skipping, and running.  They all moved the entire time though!

After our run we sat down and listened to Coach Karin tell us the story of Mini Mermaid and Siren.  The story of these two characters are symbols of the ideas and feelings we all carry inside ourselves.  Mini Mermaid and Siren, above water, are very beautiful and look similar.  Mini Mermaid represents truth; the things we know in our hearts to be right and true.  While Siren looks similar to Mini Mermaid above water, below water it's a different story.  Siren has sea urchins all over her body and a sneaky snakes tail.  Siren's voice represents lies, deceit and untruths, the things that can often be harder to see, like her tail below the surface.  Her voice is often louder than Mini Mermaid's, making it tempting to listen to her lies over Mini Mermaid's truth.  The goal of our program is to help our girls recognize when Siren is playing her tricks and how to hear the truths of Mini Mermaid that live inside each of us.

We will review the story for the girls that missed our meeting today, and will come back to the story often throughout the season.  We all want to learn to listen to Mini Mermaid's messages, and ignore those Siren ones.

Our last activity for the day was a couple of journal pages.

The girls filled out a page with information about themselves, and then drew a picture and/or described their favorite attributes about themselves.  I love these...

See you all on Sunday!
